IELTS Package Tips for GT Writing Task 1 Scoring Criteria

IELTS General Training Writing Task 1

For this writing task, you will be presented with a specific situation and will be asked to write a letter requesting or explaining the situation. The letter may be personal, formal, or semi-formal in style. You have 20 minutes to construct a letter (150 words). This writing task assesses your ability to follow the English letter-writing conventions and to organize and connect information properly.

As a test taker enrolled in an IELTS package, it is beneficial to study the scoring criteria of this writing test so that you know the things that you need to include in your letter. To guide you more, here is a list of the IELTS GT Writing Task 1 scoring criteria.

IELTS GT Writing Task 1 Scoring Criteria

      1.    Task Achievement

This scoring criterion requires you to execute the following:

·         present an overview of your letter;

·         provide accurate information with supporting details;

·         highlight critical features/stages; and

·         provide a clear and concise flow of ideas.

Tip: During your IELTS online course preparation, look for various types of letters and examine how the ideas are presented in each paragraph.

       2.    Coherence and Cohesion

For this scoring criterion, your letter must have the following:

·         an introduction that clearly states your response;

·         main points that are supported and developed; and

·         a strong conclusion.

Tip: If you want to achieve a high band score in this scoring criterion, practice constructing letters during your study time.

       3.    Lexical Resources

The third scoring criterion will require you to use a wide range of vocabulary with natural and sophisticated control of these lexical features:

·         Spelling

·         Collocation

       4.    Grammar Range and Accuracy

For the final scoring criterion, your ability to provide the following will be assessed:

·         sentence variety;

·         accurate grammar tenses (past, simple, and future tenses); and

·         correct punctuations (such as commas, periods, semicolons, parenthesis, etc.).

Tip: During your study time, learn how to use different types of sentences (simple, compound, and complex) as well as grammar tenses and punctuations when constructing your letters.
