Tips and Tricks for IELTS Speaking Part 3

Although enrolling in the best online IELTS course in the country will definitely take you closer to your band score goal, that doesn’t mean that you should rely on it solely for your test preparations.

It’s imperative that you conduct your own study sessions. Consider your performance in your classes. Which of the four components is still giving you a hard time despite weeks of intensive IELTS review? If it’s the speaking exam, then this article can help you out!

Here are some tips and tricks that will help you ace the third part of the speaking exam.

    1.   Expand your answers.
In the third part of the IELTS speaking exam, you’ll be asked to discuss your thoughts about a topic or issue. Depending on the subject, you may be asked to:

·         determine its advantages and disadvantages;
·         list its causes and effects;
·         identify possible solutions (if it’s a problem);
·         describe how it has evolved over time; or
·         predict how it will change in the future.

Don’t limit your response to a sentence or two. Otherwise, you’ll sabotage your IELTS performance. Develop your answers. If you’ve been asked to list down the issue’s pros and cons, define each point before moving on to the next.

     2.   Guess if you don’t know the answer.
Keep in mind that the IELTS exam is a language proficiency test, not a knowledge exam. As long as you were able to demonstrate your linguistic skills, you can have a high score—even if you know next to nothing about the topic.

If you reach a point where you can’t think of an answer, admit this to the examiner. Then, take a guess. Explain your assumption. Pick the brain of your best online IELTS course instructor to learn more ways to tackle unfamiliar topics.

      3.   Give yourself time to think.
You don’t have to give your answers immediately. However, you are expected to respond after a brief period. If you need more time to come up with a response you can say phrases like:

·         “It’s a bit difficult to know exactly, but I think…”
·         “I’m not really sure, but I believe…”
·         “That’s a very interesting/intriguing/difficult question, let me think for a second.”

If you’re still taking sessions at the IELTS package, your coach can teach you more ways to extend your thinking time.

      4.   Don’t beat around the bush.
Go straight to the point. Limit your discussion intro to a single sentence. Then, go straight to answering the questions. Beating around the bush increases the risk of you going off topic. And, that would definitely bring down your score.
