IELTS online review programs equip test takers with the essential knowledge and skills to reach their desired band score. As former examinees, IELTS online course review instructors have intimate knowledge of the high-stakes exam. They can teach their students how to handle its critical points, how to deal with its time constraints, and more.

If you do enroll in an IELTS online review course, make sure that you do not rely solely on your program. Restricting your training to your digital classes can severely limit your linguistic development. Complement your studies with effective learning tools.

Maximizing Study Tools: Flashcards

Flashcards are excellent study devices. However, not everyone knows how to maximize their learning potential. Most people believe that flashcards are only good for memorization and information recall. While this is not entirely incorrect, flashcards can enhance your learning experience in other ways provided that you know how to make and use them.

Here is how you make your flashcards work:

1. Create your own flashcards
While buying pre-made flashcards can save you a lot of time and money, it can slow down your review process. Making your own flashcards allows you to immerse in your target topic. You have to read through your notes, select key points, simplify them, and translate them to your flashcards. This procedure allows your brain to get acquainted with your subject matter, setting up your mindset for further review.
2. Combine words and pictures
Make your flashcards more meaningful with pictures. Using word-centered flashcards can cause key points to blur in your mind. Break the monotony by integrating helpful imagery into your materials. It is also important that you use words and pictures, not only to reinforce their association with each other but also to ingrain them in your long-term memory better.
3. Limit your questions: one only per card
If you are going to use your flashcards for question and answer purposes, write only one question per flashcard. Stuffing a single card with two or more questions can cause confusion when you try to recall the information letter.
4. Break down complex thoughts
If you are tackling an intricate concept, do not encapsulate it in a single question. Divide the concept’s key points into multiple flashcards. Not only will this make the complicated subject more digestible, it will also enable you to get to know its components better.
5. Recite while studying
Do not study with your flashcards silently. Enunciate your answers clearly to reinforce the information in your mind. When people read familiar passages, they tend to spend little time digesting or verifying the answers. This can deter your learning process, especially for vocabulary-focused flashcards.
More than just a rote memorization device, flashcards can also improve your comprehension abilities. Consider these flashcard tips during your IELTS review and take a step closer to your IELTS band score goal.
